South Carolina football needed a win and they needed it badly. They got just that against Kentucky. What did we learn about these two squads?

Let’s start by getting one thing straight, neither of these teams is going to make a deep run this season or win the conference. They have struggled throughout the start of the season and are both in a pretty deep hole already.

Now, it is just about making the best of what you have in front of you and South Carolina just happened to do that better in this one.

What did we learn about the Gamecocks as well as about Kentucky in this one?

3. Sawyer Smith isn’t the guy for Kentucky right now

This is important. I am not knocking the kid’s talent. He is a decent quarterback. He nearly brought his team to a win against Florida, you know had Kyle Trask not gone off the way he did to bring that one back. When Terry Wilson went down, Smith was the viable option at quarterback and that is all well and good for the Wildcats, but the kid is injured. His shoulder is not where it should be and it is causing issues for the team and for Smith as a player.

We saw Lynn Bowden as the quarterback sporadically and officially on the last Kentucky drive that resulted in the lone Wildcat touchdown.

Maybe it’s time to let Bowden try? Maybe Walker Wood? Anyone is better than Smith at this point because honestly, we can all tell that his shoulder injury may be worse than everyone thought and it has now smashed his confidence and the team’s confidence in him to pieces. There is really no righting the ship here.
