UCLA Football: 3 takeaways from blown opportunity vs. Arizona
By Dana Becker
1. The unusual play of the Bruins
There just seemed to be something off for UCLA all game long. The Bruins finished with 25 first downs, 445 yards of total offense, converted eight third-down attempts and rushed for 5.0 yards per carry.
But all that added up to just two offensive touchdowns and a field goal a week after lighting up the scoreboard in a come-from-behind victory over Washington State.
What went wrong? Well, it definitely didn’t help when starting quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson went out with an injury, but backup Austin Burton stepped in and completed 5-of-9 passes for 48 yards.
Thompson-Robinson and Joshua Kelley ran for almost 200 yards, but it just never felt like they were in rhythm with what Chip Kelly was calling. Things appeared off for UCLA, who is now just 1-4 with Oregon State coming to the Rose Bowl next week and games with Stanford, Arizona State and Colorado lined up before the November gauntlet of at Utah, at USC and California.
