Chris Ash is the first Power Five coach of the year to be fired. Rutgers football is in search of a new head coach. Who should it target?

Three major candidates stand out as potential replacements for Chris Ash. Two of those candidates have been or currently are head coaches of Power Five programs. The oddball out, Greg Schiano, has his own selling point for the job — he coached Rutgers for 11 seasons.

Let’s dive in on who could get the job and what they bring to the table.

1. Greg Schiano

Like stated above, he coached the Scarlet Knights for 11 seasons between 2001 and 2011. Rutgers finished with an overall record of 2-9 in 2001. Five years later, Greg Schiano took his team to the Texas Bowl where they stomped Bill Snyder’s Kansas State team and finished with an 11-2 record.

For the most part, Schiano had consistent success at Rutgers. What spoke louder than the records, were the talented players that were annually produced. NFL stars like Mohamed Sanu, Jason McCourty and Duron Harmon, just to name a few.

One thing that does blemish Schiano’s chances of the getting the job is his lack of Power Five head coaching experience. Rutgers was merely a Big East team during his tenure. After the dumpster fire at Tampa Bay and the “You almost had it!” moment at Tennessee, Schiano never quite got it done in the big leagues.
