Duke football routed the Virginia Tech Hokies last Friday night 45-14 in Blacksburg. Here’s the Blue Devils’ positional report card.

It’s difficult not to overreact after the Blue Devils’ performance last Friday, but what they did in Blacksburg was almost unbelievable. Both teams had questions coming into the season, and there weren’t super high expectations for either teams.

Duke needed to show how it was going to replace first-round pick Daniel Jones. Justin Fuente needed to prove the rash of transfers this summer weren’t indicative of the culture he’s created at Virginia Tech. However, the result — not just the score — was impossible to fathom.

What makes the game so difficult to believe is Duke was more physical than Virginia Tech. If I told you that it was the Hokies that would get bullied and pushed around by the Blue Devils there’s no way you would believe that. Bud Foster’s famous “lunch pail” defense was manhandled by Duke’s offensive line.

It was clear before the game that both programs were trending in opposite directions, but who saw this coming? No one. Here’s a report card of the Blue Devils dominant performance.
