Notre Dame, fresh off of a quality win over a previously undefeated Virginia team, invites the Bowling Green Falcons to Notre Dame Stadium for a Saturday afternoon game in South Bend.

These games are quite interesting to me as the narrative Brian Kelly and the Notre Dame football department is trying to spin is, “We want to be considered among the elite.” They are, in my opinion, among the top of the next group of very good — but not elite — programs in the country.

The elite in college football are (in whatever order you choose) Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Georgia (looks like the College Football Playoff plus-one). Teams like Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Texas and Oregon lead the next tier of programs. However, the way you perform against inferior opponents goes a long way to showing you belong among the elite.

It will be interesting to see how the Irish look early and what kind of statement they look to make at the expense of the Falcons.
