Baylor Football: 3 takeaways from road win over Kansas State
By Zach Bigalke
2. Charlie Brewer had a solid day for Baylor
Baylor has had some incredible quarterbacks come through Waco over the years, none better than Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III. Charlie Brewer has been nowhere near as prolific as some of the former greats to suit up for Baylor, but because the defense is so good he doesn’t have to be overwhelming statistically.
What is important is that Brewer is consistent and takes care of the football. He did just that against Kansas State, throwing for 230 yards and a touchdown on 14-of-23 passing. Tyquan Thornton was his favorite target, as the receiver finished with four catches for 92 yards — including the 29-yard touchdown throw.
Brewer doesn’t bring much in terms of wheels, and he was sacked three times by Kansas State. But Matt Rhule and offensive co-coordinators Jeff Nixon and Glenn Thomas have no expectation that their quarterback is going to contribute anything but negative yardage in the ground game.
The quarterback did exactly what he needed to do to ensure that the Bears walked away from Manhattan with a win on Saturday to stay undefeated and play their way into the polls. If he maintains this level of play through Big 12 play, Baylor looks to be a player in the conference shuffle.
