Iowa State Football: 3 takeaways from blowout win over TCU
By Dante Pryor
Iowa State football was looking to make a statement against TCU and it did just that on Saturday afternoon, blowing out the Horned Frogs.
The Iowa State Cyclones held off a late run with two fourth-quarter touchdowns of their own and handled the TCU Horned Frogs 49-24 earlier this afternoon at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa.
The Cyclones dominated the game early jumping out to a 21-3 halftime lead. They had their way in the trenches against TCU on both sides of the ball. Brock Purdy showed why he is one of the best young quarterbacks in the country with over 200 yards passing and over 100 yards rushing.
The Horned Frogs struggled to find offense for much of the game. Texas Christian freshman quarterback Max Duggan had issues finding his rhythm for most of the game. That prompted head coach Gary Patterson to pull him in favor of Kansas State transfer Alex Delton. Duggan found a groove in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late for Max and the Horned Frogs.
Here are three more takeaways from the game.
3. Brock Purdy had complementary running
Brock Purdy is the Iowa State offense. He much like Big 12 rival Sam Ehlinger is going to have the most carries, and of course throw the football. However, they both need complementary runners.
They need guys who are going to be a threat so defenses know they can’t just key on them in the run game.
It’s unclear how long this will last, but today at least Purdy found a very good complementary runner in Johnnie Lang. His 72 yards and two touchdowns gave Purdy the relief he needed today — so much so that Lang had four more carries than Purdy.
