Oklahoma vs Texas already sets record for most penalties in single game
Before the Oklahoma vs Texas game even got started, both sides set the record for most penalties in a single game. No, that’s not a typo.
The game hadn’t even started yet, but the Oklahoma vs Texas officiating crew made history. After a pregame skirmish between the Sooners and Longhorns, the crew decided to call an unsportsmanlike penalty on every single player from each side.
This is uncharted water because, well, it’s never been done before.
That meant that any player who gets an unsportsmanlike during the game would be ejected — two unsportsmanlike penalties equals an ejection.
Previously, the NCAA record for most penalties in a single game was 36 from a 1986 game between Fresno State and San Jose State where the latter got 24 of those.
While it’s unclear whether or not the NCAA will count upwards of 100-something penalties from the pregame scuffle, it should. This has never happened before and if it’s going to be technical, it needs to be marked down as over 100 total penalties before kickoff even takes place.
It’s safe to say Texas and Oklahoma don’t like each other and it was obvious because there were a couple of pregame altercations and shouting matches. To think that no player will slip up and get a second unsportsmanlike penalty during the game would be foolish. This could also go down as the most ejections in a single game as well before it’s said and done.
Chippy doesn’t even begin to describe Saturday’s Red River Showdown between the Sooners and Longhorns.
