Penn State Football: 3 takeaways from important road win over Iowa
By Dante Pryor
2. Iowa has a scoring problem
Iowa’s offense is predictable and vanilla. Penn State has shown themselves to be an elite-level defense at all three levels, but Iowa had no scheme for the Nittany Lions.
The Hawkeyes couldn’t run on the Nittany Lions, but there was little variety to the Hawkeyes’ rushing attack. When Iowa became one-dimensional, it had trouble throwing against the Penn State secondary.
The Nittany Lions found themselves with two sacks and two turnovers against an offense that usually keeps their quarterback upright and don’t beat themselves by giving the ball to the other team.
When Iowa saw what Penn State wanted to do against them, the Hawkeyes had no adjustments. They weren’t able to do anything against the Hawkeyes. Much of that had to do with Penn State’s defensive speed and disruptive defensive line.
However, Iowa’s inability to find something that could work against Penn State shows a lack of schematic variety and dynamic offensive playmakers.
