SEC football had yet another eventful week with a massive upset, a top-10 battle and another ranked matchup. Who tops this week’s power rankings?
The self-proclaimed best conference in football had another interesting week after a top-10 team went down at home to an unranked foe, a top-10 battle took place and another ranked matchup happened in College Station.
What do the latest SEC power rankings look like?
Derek Mason’s days might be numbered in Nashville. Unlike their counterparts in the SEC, Vanderbilt is as proud of their accomplishments in their non-revenue sports as they are in football. They play in an antiquated stadium with sub-par facilities. With that being said, Vanderbilt is awful.
Of all teams you lose to outside of the Power Five, you lose to UNLV. The Runnin’ Rebels are not good. It’s one thing to lose to an elite Group of Five team like UCF, Boise State or even Tulane, but losing to a struggling team says exactly where your program is. There might be just one more win on the slate for the Commodores, and it’s against 2-4 East Tennessee State, although they did just lose to a 2-4 Group of Five school so who knows.
While we are on the subject of equally bad SEC teams, the Razorbacks have been toothless to say the least this season. They bowed up and played their rival Texas A&M tough, but that might say more about the Aggies than the Razorbacks. They lost to a Kentucky team that used a wide receiver as their starting quarterback gashing them for 330 rushing yards. It’s one thing to get gashed when a team keeps you honest, it’s an entirely different matter when you know what’s coming and you still can’t stop it.
One thing Arkansas seemed to have going for it was its defense, but they are giving up a shade over 400 yards and 27 points per game. Second-year head coach Chad Morris needs to get two things right sooner rather than later; he needs to find his quarterback, and he needs to get that offensive line together. Looking at the remainder of their schedule this is a three-win season for the Razorbacks unless they steal one.
About that team that beat Arkansas with their wide receiver playing quarterback, the Wildcats are suffering the effects of losing NFL caliber talent from their team. Their win against Arkansas was much-needed as it broke a three-game losing streak. Kentucky needs to figure out how to score. Their defense has been steady this year, but they can’t find any points.
This is 2019, and you need offense if you want a chance to win consistently especially in the SEC. Starting quarterback Swayer Smith is completing less than 50 percent of his passes, and Lynn Bowden Jr. is has been their best option at quarterback and he’s a wide receiver. Transfer portal anyone?
