BYU Football: 3 takeaways from huge upset at home over Boise State

2. Baylor Romney could be the next great BYU quarterback
Yes, Zach Wilson was unable to play and will likely be sidelined for most if not all of the rest of the 2019 season. And yes, Jaren Hall was also unable to take the field for the Cougars. But BYU was able to weather the storm thanks to a talented young quarterback who might just be the next great Cougars passer.
Baylor Romney got his first start for BYU, and the true freshman left a solid first impression in front of a welcoming crowd in Provo. The quarterback completed nearly 60 percent of his passes as he threw for 221 yards, completing 15 of his 26 attempts along the way.
He also tossed two touchdown passes, linking up with tight end Matt Bushman for both scores. Both scores came during the huge third-quarter surge, the first on a 39-yard passing play with 4:49 remaining and the second on a 27-yard strike 99 seconds later. They proved critical in the long run, as Boise State made their spirited but ultimately futile comeback bid against the Cougars.
He had less luck on the ground, where he was sacked multiple times and finished with two net rushing yards. Romney’s last carry would have iced the game, but after a lengthy review it proved just short of moving the chains. BYU still ran out the clock after a fourth-down conversion, and ultimately Romney’s value for the Cougars moving forward is as a budding passer.
