Texas A&M Football: 3 quick takeaways from win over Ole Miss
By Shelbie Warr
Texas A&M football got a much-needed road win in Oxford, knocking off Ole Miss 24-17. What did we learn about these two teams in a close one?
Texas A&M and Ole Miss struggled to really get anything going consistently, a theme for both teams so far this season. Both groups needed a win for their postseason hopes to stay alive, but the Aggies prevailed, in the end, thanks to a couple of strong defensive plays and some gutsy runs by Kellen Mond.
What did we learn about these two teams?
3. Ole Miss has a bright future ahead
With true freshmen quarterback John Rhys Plumlee and running Jerrion Ealy, among a large group of other true freshmen on this team that have been extremely good throughout the year. Are they good enough to be a top of the SEC team this year? No, not at all. But, they have all the pieces to put together a strong run in the upcoming years for sure, assuming that this coaching staff is able to keep up with everyone else of course.
2. Kellen Mond is one strong man, despite a lack of protection
Is he the best quarterback in the SEC like he self-proclaimed himself? No, he isn’t. However, he has been through a lot this season. The offensive line though isn’t good at all. This unit needs some serious help if they are going to pull off any kind of upset at the end of the season. Mond has pushed through a lot of crap so far this season. He has been sacked and pressured quite a bit and as a result, has made a lot of mistakes with the ball that I’m sure he wishes he could have back.
Despite everything though, Aggie fans should be proud to have Mond as their quarterback. While he isn’t going to win a championship with this team? No, but he’s doing everything he can and that is all you can ask for and more.
1. This one came down to production off turnovers
Ole Miss got two interceptions off of Kellen Mond in this one. However, they weren’t able to produce much of anything on the scoreboard. In a close game, those kinds of points is necessary. The Aggies, on the other hand, got the scoop and score off the fumble that changed everything in a hurry. This was a game of momentum swings and the Aggies got the biggest one that eventually won the game for them.
It is an uphill battle for the rest of the season though, so nothing is guaranteed for either team at this point.
