Boise State football has surprised people with their hot start and then-recent slip up to BYU in 2019. We take a look at some of the key takeaways.

Boise State started the first half of its season on fire, winning the first six games and getting to the top of the Group of Five in the national polls. The Broncos were ranked as high as No. 13 and looked to play spoiler in the New Year’s Six bowl conversations.

This was until the Broncos traveled to BYU without their starting quarterback Hank Bachmeier.

Boise State dropped their first game of the season last Saturday, losing to the BYU Cougars on the road. Without starter Hank Bachmeier, the offense struggled to move the ball and was left with sophomore Chase Cord to run the show. He had an up and down performance in his first-ever start, throwing two bad interceptions and also getting two touchdowns through the air as well.

Boise State is heading into a bye for Week 9, trying to get their star freshman quarterback Hank Bachmeier healthy. It is yet to be seen how long Bachmeier is truly out as head coach Bryan Harsin is per usual tight-lipped out player injuries for the Broncos. Boise State heads into the bye week still ranked in the top 25 in the country at No. 22 and just behind Cincinnati and SMU for the top Group of Five teams.

Despite losing to BYU, the Broncos still have a shot to make it to an NY6 bowl as long as they have a bit of help with SMU and Cincinnati slipping up here down the road. Boise State will attempt to get healthy in the bye week and look forward to San Jose State in week 10.

As the Broncos look forward to the Spartans in two weeks, we take a look at three important things we learned in the first half of the season.
