College Football: 25 Greatest Quarterbacks of the 21st century
By John Scimeca
Kellen Moore finished his college career at Boise State as the winningest starting quarterback in history, compiling a 50-3 record as a starter for four seasons.
Moore’s career as a Bronco is filled with superlatives relating to his on-field performance and poise: a 12-1 record as a freshman, a 14-0 record as a sophomore (time to unfurl the national championship banner, anyone?), and 12-1 records both as a junior and a senior.
Moore threw for 14,667 yards, 143 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions for his career. He currently ranks as the No. 6 all-time college passing leader. In terms of passing touchdowns, Moore ranks second all-time behind only Houston’s Case Keenum.
Moore received Heisman votes in three of his four seasons, though he never cracked the top three in terms of overall votes. In his junior season, after throwing for 3,536 yards, 33 touchdowns, and five interceptions, he became the first Boise State player to get invited to the Heisman awards ceremony in New York as a finalist (though he would finish fourth overall).
Moore’s legacy among the greatest quarterbacks of college football is unquestionably tied to, as was the case during his playing days, the level of competition that he faced while at Boise State. During the Prosser, Wash. native’s career, the Broncos transitioned from the WAC to the Mountain West.
Moore’s professional career largely fizzled out with the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys; through six seasons, he played sparingly after going undrafted in the 2012 NFL Draft. He has, though, remained relevant in football circles of today by helping direct the Dallas Cowboys as the team’s new offensive coordinator.
For his role in continuing Boise State’s winning ways as arguably the top non-power conference team in college football, Moore deserves recognition as one of the game’s best quarterbacks.
