Texas Football: 3 takeaways from upset loss at TCU in Week 9
By Zach Bigalke
2. Max Duggan made fewer mistakes to ensure an upset
While Sam Ehlinger made costly mistakes that put TCU in position to pull off the upset at home, they also needed their own quarterback to convert those chances into points. And on a day where he came up bigger than Ehlinger, young Horned Frogs passer Max Duggan played a more disciplined game to lead TCU to the victory.
Duggan was more accurate with the football, finishing 19-of-27 as he completed more than two-thirds of his throws. The quarterback added a pair of touchdowns as he finished with 273 yards through the air, just one interception blemishing an otherwise stellar performance throwing the ball.
Duggan added a strong performance on the ground when he kept the football. By the end of the game, Duggan led the team in rushing with 72 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. That dual-threat ability made the Texas defense play on its heels all game, as they had the pace dictated to them rather than dictating the flow of things.
When Texas needed Ehlinger to come up big, he fell short. When TCU needed Duggan to make a big play, he came through. Quarterback play proved to be one of the biggest differences on a day when both teams produced more than 400 yards of offense.
