3. Chuba Hubbard is a legitimate Heisman candidate

The former track star from Alberta continues to lead the nation in rushing after the Iowa State win with 1,381 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. The second-highest total from Ohio State’s J.K. Dobbins is more than 200 yards shy of Hubbard.

Hubbard’s 116 rushing yards and a touchdown on 22 carries helped lead the Cowboys to their victory against the Cyclones. His 65-yard touchdown dash in the second quarter gave the Cowboys a 21-10 lead and left the Cyclones defenders reeling.

Hold your horses, though, on your hopes of seeing Hubbard lifting up hardware in New York City at the season’s end. Louisville’s Lamar Jackson is a recent exception, but team success factors heavily in determining a Heisman Trophy winner. Three losses by the Pokes doesn’t help Hubbard’s case, especially if he’s compared to the quarterbacks of the nation’s top teams.

Several quarterbacks are hogging the limelight this season for the award, too, aided by more elaborate spread offenses and an up-tempo style. Since 2010, only one running back has won the award — Alabama’s Derrick Henry in 2015.
