Oklahoma State Football: 3 overreactions from huge win over Iowa State
By John Scimeca
1. Cowboys have a shot at conference title
Entering Week 9, Iowa State was 3-1 in Big 12 play and squarely in the discussion for a spot in the Big 12 title game. Its loss, plus the defeats by OU and Texas, has muddled things in the conference standings. Couldn’t OSU make a run at a Big 12 championship game appearance? There is a lot of football left to be played, and league leader Baylor has not played Texas or Oklahoma yet.
A conference title run appears to be out of the Cowboys’ grasp. OSU is 2-3 in Big 12 play and would need to run the table to even be considered — that includes a Bedlam date with OU. They would also need a series of losses by Texas and others, because the Longhorns would own the head-to-head tiebreaker against OSU.
Even if Baylor were to win out, it’s still highly unlikely that the hypothetical three-loss Cowboys could emerge as the Big 12’s second-place team by the season’s end.
OSU doesn’t need a 13th game in Arlington, Texas to declare the 2019 season a success. Bettering last year’s win total and beating OU would be enough for many Cowboy fans.
