BYU Football: 3 takeaways from Old Wagon Wheel win over Utah State

3. The BYU receiving corps gets solid service no matter the quarterback
On Saturday night, Jaren Hall got the start for BYU. He came in and threw for 214 yards on 12-of-16 passing, spreading the ball around and locking up a 21-14 lead at the half. Hall also ran for 54 yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns on seven carries, showcasing his dual-threat abilities and the opportunities they present for the Cougars offense.
After halftime, Hall took the bench and Baylor Romney took his spot under center. Showing off a less mobile skill set than Hall, Romney nevertheless guided the BYU offense ably if in a different fashion. Relying mostly on his arm, Romney drove the Cougars to a couple of third-quarter touchdowns that opened up a three-score lead. The backup finished the night 10-of-16 for 191 yards with two passing touchdowns and an interception.
And that is without mentioning the fact that both of these young men are backups to Zach Wilson, the opening-day starter for the Cougars that has been sidelined with an injury to his throwing hand that was sustained in the loss at Toledo and which required surgery at the beginning of October.
With Hall and Romney both freshmen this season, BYU is set at the quarterback position for years to come. And the receivers, eight of whom caught passes on Saturday night, will continue to benefit over the coming games and seasons. Gunner Romney and Micah Simon caught touchdown passes, and Talon Shumway led the way with 61 receiving yards on his three catches.
