Chase Young was suspended for Saturday’s game by Ohio State football meaning his Heisman Trophy hopes are all but crushed.

It was the news no one expected to hear on Friday morning, but Chase Young was suspended for the Maryland game on Saturday for a violation of NCAA rules.

According to the suspension from Ohio State, Young received a loan from a family friend but the junior All-American reportedly paid it back already. If that’s the case, don’t expect this suspension to snowball into two or three games.

While this may ultimately be a non-issue by the end of the year, Young’s absence from the Maryland game will have huge implications for him in the Heisman Trophy battle. He has been widely considered a serious candidate to win the award and he would become the first defensive player to take it home since Charles Woodson.

But missing a game at this point in the season could spell the end of his hopes to win the award — just ask Tua Tagovailoa how much his Heisman stock has dropped since his injury.

No, I don’t anticipate Young to be out more than one game as it seems as if he can prove he paid the loan back, but even one game is enough for Heisman voters to move on. Playing an entire 12-game regular season is important if you want to win the Heisman, especially for defensive players who always need to add to the resume to prove they belong in the conversation.

The Chase Young Heisman campaign was fun while it lasted, but this one game will be enough to eliminate him from the race. One day we’ll have a defensive player win it, but will he be as dominant as Young has been this year?
