USC Football: 3 takeaways from big road win at Arizona State in Week 11

2. Joey Yellen stepped up big in his first start
With Jayden Daniels sidelined with a knee injury, freshman Joey Yellen came in to get his first start with the Sun Devils. That turned into a revelatory performance by the youngster, as Yellen kept Arizona State in the contest against the Trojans and had them on the cusp of the red zone near the final hurdle.
Ultimately he threw an interception in the final minute that sealed the victory for USC. But he still performed solidly for a first-time starter facing a team like the Trojans. Yellen completed 28 of his 44 passing attempts for 292 yards, connecting with seven different receivers over the course of the contest.
He did throw two interceptions, including that costly one at the end with Arizona State driving for a game-winning touchdown. But mistakes must be expected and endured when you opt to go with a young quarterback, and Herm Edwards and his staff knew the risks when they opted to start Yellen.
Ultimately, though, growing pains are what they are and serve as useful fodder for learning. Yellen showed in nervous conditions that he can make a solid contribution when called upon in relief, and if Daniels is out for any length of time he showed tremendous growth potential for the future.
