Virginia Tech Football: 3 takeaways from dominant win over Wake Forest

2. Defense came to play for Bud Foster
The Virginia Tech Hokies honored retiring defensive coordinator and associate head coach Bud Foster during this game. The defense came to play for their coach.
The game plan was as close to perfect as you can get. The defense didn’t allow the Wake Forest option-read game to breathe at all.
One of the big factors in Wake Forest’s success is their running game with the quarterback. Jamie Newman has been a force with both his legs and his arm this season. He had 12 carries for -4 yards against Virginia Tech. That forced the Deacons’ hand when it came to the passing game. They were forced in too many obvious passing downs.
The Virginia Tech defensive line won the trenches in this one. The Hokies were in the Wake Forest backfield all game long. Virginia Tech had three sacks and a host of quarterback hits. The Deacons could find no rhythm all night.
What a way to play for your coach.
