Pac-12 Football Power Rankings, Week 12: The end of the Mike Leach era?
By Kyle Grondin
Speculation has arisen about the status of multiple Pac-12 football coaches, where do they stand now? Plus, the weekly power rankings update.
Another week of Pac-12 football, and it is time to have a serious conversation about the coaching status of multiple coaches in the conference.
After 10 games, which coaches are on the hot seat, and who have saved their jobs? And who has their eyes on their next job?
Many people questioned Herm Edwards and Mario Cristobal before the season, but the way the Sun Devils have played at points, and Oregon’s been one of the best teams in college football, so both of their jobs are completely safe.
David Shaw and Chip Kelly have bounced back, and neither were going anywhere anyways. Chris Petersen isn’t going anywhere, despite the set back. Mel Tucker will get another year. After Kyle Whittingham, Justin Wilcox and Jonathan Smith. It leaves just a couple of head coaches with their jobs in question.
Clay Helton is as good as gone. Winning at Arizona State saved his job, but USC wants him out, and if reports are true, USC’s new athletic director Mike Bohn took the job asking if he could change the head football coach. Helton is warming the seat for Urban Meyer.
Mike Leach is looking towards the other jobs ahead of him. He’s been great at Pullman, and his offense has been one of the top in the country year after year. But he was batting his eyelashes at Tennessee, and with jobs available at Arkansas, Florida State and jobs more than likely opening up at Iowa State and other power five schools. I think Leach is jumping ship.
The wild card is Kevin Sumlin. It was a big deal when he showed up at Arizona, but is he moving the needle? Signs point to him not being a very good coach, but the Wildcats are paying him a lot of money, so I think he gets one more year. So disappointing to see Khalil Tate’s career wasted.
That’s where we stand, now on to the rankings.
