LSU football hit the road to take on a gritty Ole Miss team and came away with a blowout win. What’d we learn from this one?

The No. 1 team in the country did it again. With two games left in the regular season, LSU is just a couple of weeks away from locking in that No. 1 spot in the playoff rankings with a looming SEC title game — and they may just guarantee a playoff spot no matter the outcome of that game.

LSU still had some work to do and took care of Ole Miss on Saturday evening in Oxford despite the Rebels putting up a fight in the second half and making the Tigers’ defense look pedestrian.

The Tigers did get the win, however, and improved to 10-0 on the season.

What’d we learn from LSU’s big win over Ole Miss?

3. Defense needs more consistency

One thing that has been slightly head-scratching this season has been the consistency of the LSU defense. The Tigers go from being dominant to allowing 30-40 points against teams with a pulse on the offensive side of the ball.

In years past the Alabama-LSU game would have been a 10-7 affair or something in that realm, but this year it was 46-41. The Tigers just aren’t shutting teams down for 60 minutes like they have in previous seasons.

That all looked to change on Saturday after a strong first half, leading 31-7. And then the second half started.

The Tigers were getting gashed on the ground in the third quarter and Ole Miss scored 16 points rather quickly but luckily Joe Burrow and the offense responded to keep the Rebels at arm’s length. If the Tigers want to win the national title this year, the defense needs to be more consistent.
