The Bearcats kept their Cotton Bowl hopes alive with a close win against the South Florida Bulls. Cincinnati’s winning streak has been impressive — the Bearcats have won eight in a row since their loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes.

We’ve seen, however, the streak take its toll. They’ve had close wins against East Carolina and now South Florida. They need to muster a big time effort this season when they face the Temple Owls, a team that’s shown themselves more than capable of defeating a big time opponent — ask Memphis.

The Tigers’ game against the Houston Cougars is the perfect metaphor for their season. They were down early, closed the gap at halftime, and pulled away in the second half. It was the defense in this one that made the difference. The Tigers allowed only seven points in the second half. They remain No. 1 for a simple reason: Memphis, like Cincinnati, has everything in front of it. The Tigers have an improved South Florida team on the road — no gimme — before their showdown with Memphis.

The Tigers can’t look ahead; the Bulls are looking to win out and get to a bowl. Both teams have a lot to lose this week so Memphis had better be careful.
