Arizona State Football: 3 takeaways from shocking upset over Oregon

1. Through the ups and downs, Arizona State is bowling

In Week 7, Arizona State sat at 5-1, ranked, playing Utah in what looked like a great opportunity for Herm Edwards to get a signature win in year two. At that point, becoming bowl eligible seemed like a shoo-in whether they won or lost.

That led to four straight losses for the Sun Devils, including giving up 108 points combined against Oregon State, UCLA and USC. Reaching a bowl game seemed that much harder, until Saturday night.

While Edwards hasn’t been perfect, there’s no question he’s the right man for the job in Tempe. He clearly had these guys motivated to play tonight, and the game plan on offense and defense to beat one of the best teams in all of college football. Arizona State will now be bowling this season.
