Oklahoma football built a big early lead on TCU but the Horned Frogs clawed their way back into the game. What’d we learn from Oklahoma’s tight win?

What a game. While it may have been officially decided by a questionable first-down ruling which couldn’t be overturned, Oklahoma held on to beat TCU 28-24 in Lincoln on Saturday night, avoiding a massive upset.

Oklahoma mounted a big lead over the Horned Frogs, looking like it was about to run away with a 40 or 50-point win. But the TCU defense limited Oklahoma to just seven points in the second half and had a chance to take a late lead, but Max Duggan threw a critical interception.

To say Oklahoma is breathing a sigh of relief as its playoff hopes remain alive would be a massive understatement.

3. TCU is tough

Oklahoma would be the first to tell you, TCU is one tough team.

The young Horned Frogs looked overmatched early on down 21-0 but they didn’t quit. They pieced together a comeback, scoring 24 of the next 31 points to pull within four in the fourth quarter and a lot of that had to do with the defense stepping up as well as Max Duggan not panicking down the stretch — though he didn’t have a great game.

Unfortunately, the freshman quarterback turned the ball over in a crucial moment in the game, tossing into into the arms of Brendan Radley-Hiles on a fourth down play which essentially crushed any comeback hope the Horned Frogs had.

This team fought its heart out and it looked like a team that’s going to give the rest of the Big 12 problems for years to come under Gary Patterson.
