Welcome to the Group of Five New Year’s Six watch. Now there are four remaining members. Read on to find out who had their watch ended.

The SMU Mustangs were one of the great stories of the college football season.

When most people think of Southern Methodist, they think of three things: The Pony Express: Eric Dickerson and Craig James, recruits getting envelopes and the NCAA death penalty. Despite the death penalty, the Mustangs actually experienced some success this decade under former head coach June Jones going to four bowl games in his seven seasons.

Chad Morris took SMU to a bowl game once in his three seasons and after a five-win first season, the Mustangs are having their best season since 1984.

This week, however, the Mustangs fell to the Navy Midshipmen. This is by no means a throw away season for SMU and Sonny Dykes has done a wonderful job in Dallas with that program. Unfortunately for SMU, a second conference loss has dropped them to third in the AAC West and out of the New Year’s Six running. A good season, but now their watch has ended.

And then there were four. Here is the New Year’s Six watch for Week 13.
