Oklahoma State football: 3 keys to 2019 Bedlam victory over Oklahoma
By John Scimeca
It’s time for the 114th meeting between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State football. How can the Cowboys pull off a Bedlam upset this year?
It’s normally a painful part of the year for Oklahoma State football fans. We battle the holiday season traffic, we bundle up as the wind chills drop, and we watch our favorite football team lose in agonizing fashion to our biggest rival. Welcome to the end of November, Cowboy fans.
OSU has lost 14 of its last 16 games in against OU, including the last four in a row. The Saturday after Thanksgiving (though not always the timing of the annual Bedlam matchup) has now become a pastime for OSU fans to: watch a spirited Cowboys effort fall spectacularly short, like in 2018’s 48-47 defeat; see the defense get shredded like Swiss cheese, like 2017’s 62-52 loss; or witness a drubbing against what you thought was an evenly matched game, like 2015’s 58-23 humiliation in Stillwater.
Oklahoma has won 88 times against OSU’s 18 series wins, not including seven ties.
Oklahoma opens as a 14.5-point favorite against OSU for this Saturday’s Week 14 matchup. The Sooners boast the nation’s best offense, churning out 574.7 yards per game behind experienced quarterback Jalen Hurts and his talented cast of NFL-bound playmakers, such as CeeDee Lamb, Kennedy Brooks, and Charleston Rambo. OU (10-1, 7-1) is currently ranked No. 7 in the College Football Playoff rankings.
The Cowboys (8-3, 5-3), on the other hand, are missing their star wideout, Tylan Wallace, who tore his ACL in a non-contact practice drill a couple weeks ago. Days before the Week 13 West Virginia contest, OSU confirmed that starting quarterback Spencer Sanders had undergone thumb surgery.
Clearly, the nation’s leading rusher, Chuba Hubbard, can only do so much for OSU. He’s accumulated 1,832 yards and 20 touchdowns this season.
Read on for three keys to an OSU upset victory against Oklahoma.
