3. Nebraska couldn’t piece together a complete game

This game was in many ways a microcosm of their season. It was — as their season — filled with ups and downs. They started slow, and the Hawkeyes jumped out to a 17-3 lead before they scored a touchdown.

Before they knew what hit them, the Huskers were down 24-10 at halftime. To their credit, the Nebraska Cornhuskers did not give up. The Hawkeyes began to have trouble moving the ball in the second half. They summoned the spirit of Blackshirts past and forced three consecutive punts.

Moreover, the Hawkeyes went three-and-out three consecutive times gaining one yard on those three drives. The Cornhuskers took advantage, and scored two touchdowns to tie the game.

The Hawkeyes couldn’t move the ball at all in the second half totaling a meager 75 yards and three points. Nebraska couldn’t take full advantage. The Cornhuskers did score 14 points in the third quarter, but were shut out in the fourth. The Huskers looked inefficient and out of sync on offense at times as they have all season. The defense did their part in the second half, but the Huskers just couldn’t muster more offense in the second half.

The game might have been different if the Cornhuskers wouldn’t have gotten off to such a bad start.
