Virginia Football: 3 takeaways from clutch rivalry win over Virginia Tech
With a chance to go to North Carolina to play for the ACC title, this rivalry game did not disappoint. What’d we learn from Virginia football’s win?
Coming into this game, both Virginia and Virginia Tech were red hot. Both had won three straight and four of their last five. Something had to give with a chance to go play Clemson in the ACC Championship up for grabs. Not to mention these schools have been playing each other since 1895, so there was no love lost here.
Bryce Perkins kicked off the party with a 39 yard touchdown run on the first drive and a 67 yard touchdown late in the quarter giving Virginia a 13-3 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter was dominated by both defenses. In this quarter alone there was a combined five three-and-outs, an interception and a fumble.
Virginia Tech added a field goal off a Tayvion Robinson punt return that got them in great field position to go into the half down 13-6.
Both offenses then exploded in the second half that featured four ties and four lead changes. Both teams combined for 50 points and 578 yards in this half which was a stark contrast from the first half. A Hendon Hooker interception late in the fourth quarter led to a go ahead 48 field goal by Virginia kicker Brian Delaney to give them a late 33-30 lead. A fumble recovery in the end zone by Virginia finished the job giving them a 39-30 win, and their first win over Virginia Tech since 2003.
What’d we learn in this Commonwealth Cup battle?
