Alabama Football: 3 takeaways from crushing 2019 Iron Bowl loss to Auburn
1. Alabama’s future
Had Alabama won this game, we would have had precedent to suggest that the Alabama Crimson Tide can still be selected to play in this year’s College Football Playoff. But after this loss to the Auburn Tigers, there isn’t really any way the playoff committee can justify putting the Crimson Tide in the playoff.
Alabama now has two losses and can only hope to still be included in a New Year’s Six bowl.
As previously mentioned, Mac Jones played well, but you can’t help but consider what could have been if Nick Saban played Tua Tagovailoa’s brother, Taulia.
Alabama will have about a month to prepare for their bowl game. Nick Saban is famous for pushing his players no matter who they’re playing and what game they’re playing. Taulia and Jones will undoubtedly be in deep competition for the quarterback position. This will be true with many other positions as well.
During the 2017 season, Alabama lost the Iron Bowl against Auburn and was unable to play for the SEC Championship Game. However, the College Football Playoff committee still ranked Alabama at No. 4, allowing them to play in the playoff. This decision was extremely controversial, but proved to be the right one because the Crimson Tide ended up winning the National Championship.
The committee will have a much easier time this year by not having to make this decision again.
