5. Northwestern 29, Illinois 10

Northwestern won its first conference game of the season by defeating in-state foe Illinois in convincing fashion. Illinois had turned heads earlier this season under head coach Lovie Smith by knocking off then-No. 6 Wisconsin on its way to a 6-5 record before Week 14.

With the loss, the Fighting Illini were denied the chance for the school’s best regular season since 2007, when a 9-3 Illinois squad advanced to the Rose Bowl under former coach Ron Zook. Northwestern now finishes 2019 with a 3-9 (1-8) record.

4. No. 12 Wisconsin 38, No. 8 Minnesota 17

It may not have surprised the oddsmakers, but Wisconsin’s triumph for Paul Bunyan’s axe resulted in the official end of Minnesota’s CFP dreams. With the victory, the Badgers punched their ticket for a Big Ten championship game spot against No. 1 Ohio State.

Though one of the nation’s leading rushers, Jonathan Taylor, only gained 76 yards on 18 carries (in addition to two touchdowns), the Badgers broke open the game in the second half and ended what had been a promising season for coach P.J. Fleck and the Gophers.
