Boise State Football: 3 takeaways from 2019 MWC title win over Hawaii
By Zach Bigalke
Boise State football took down Hawaii on the Smurf Turf to win the Mountain West title. What did we learn from the Broncos’ victory on Saturday?
Boise State came into Championship Saturday feeling the sting from last year’s collapse against Fresno State. Knowing that they needed to win to keep alive any shot at reaching the Cotton Bowl this season, the Broncos crushed Hawaii for the second time this season in a 31-10 mismatch at Albertsons Stadium in the Mountain West title game.
The game stayed close through the first quarter as the two teams traded field goals. Boise State ran away with the lead after scoring two unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter, taking a 17-3 lead into the locker room at halftime. Once the two teams returned to the field after the intermission, it was more of the same as the Broncos continued to put pressure on the Rainbow Warriors.
It remains to be seen what the College Football Playoff selection committee will do with Boise State vis-à-vis the nailbiters in other Group of Five title games. What we do know, however, is that the Broncos did exactly what was necessary to claim as many style points as possible in their most recent data point.
Will it be enough to earn the trip to the Cotton Bowl this season? That remains to be seen, but we certainly learned some important lessons from this battle in Boise. Here are three takeaways from the Mountain West championship victory by the Broncos over the Rainbow Warriors.
