4. Outback Bowl: Minnesota vs. Auburn

Happy New Year. The Outback Bowl will be the first game of 2020, and what a matchup it is between Minnesota and Auburn.

Will the Tigers maul the Gophers or will Minnesota end their season in style?

The Gophers have been one of the stories of the 2019 season. They’ve been transformed in a couple of years under P.J. Fleck, and although they’ve come up short of the glory days associated with the program in the early 1900s, they’re clearly “rowing” in the right direction.

Auburn are no strangers to the Outback Bowl. This will be the fifth time the Tigers have played in the game, most recently losing in overtime to Wisconsin. Ironically, it was the Badgers who ended Minnesota’s chance of playing in the Big Ten Championship Game this year.

Auburn and Minnesota have never met before, and their first clash should be a cracker. Auburn are coming in hot after shocking Alabama in their final regular season game. Minnesota will be looking to shake off that Wisconsin defeat.

On paper, the two are very evenly matched.

They have similar points per game averages, and similar yardage for and against per game. With both teams scoring over 30 points a game, the game could be decided by which defense steps up.

The hallmark of the Gophers season, aside from an offensive explosion from Tanner Morgan, has been their defense.

Antoine Winfield Jr leads the nation in interceptions and will provide a worthy adversary for Auburn’s freshman quarterback, Bo Nix.

Auburn have one of the best bowl records in the nation. Will it still be that good by the end of 2020?
