Virginia Tech Football: 3 keys to victory vs. Kentucky in Belk Bowl

Virginia Tech football comes into the 2019 Belk Bowl as a favorite over the Kentucky Wildcats but ESPN’s FPI has them as a big underdog.

Through many meetings as non-conference foes, the 2019 Belk Bowl will be the first time that the Virginia Tech Hokies (8-4) and the Kentucky Wildcats (7-5) in a post-season matchup. This will be the 20th meeting between the Hokies and the Wildcats with the latest matchup coming in on Halloween in 1987 when the Wildcats won at home 14-7.

The Hokies were on the verge of playing in the ACC Championship Game until they lost to their rivals in the Virginia Cavaliers 39-30. Virginia Tech is playing for a lot more than a normal bowl game. They are playing to get a huge start for next season’s 2020 college football season.

If the Hokies win this game against the Wildcats, the Hokies would have won their ninth game of the season. This season would be the third nine-win season under head coach Justin Fuente in his fourth season with the Virginia Tech Hokies.

The Hokies are playing a Wildcats that undergone an offensive philosophy change tremendously including a change in quarterback. The Wildcats finished their seven games of the season with 5-2 streak including an impressive 45-13 win over the Louisville Cardinals.
