Cincinnati Football: 3 takeaways from Birmingham Bowl win over Boston College
By Zach Bigalke
Cincinnati football proved it was one of the best Group of Five teams as it downed Boston College in the Birmingham Bowl on the day after New Year’s Day.
For the second straight year, Boston College endured a weather delay a bowl game. Last year, the delay turned into a cancellation of the First Responder Bowl against Boise State. This season, the Eagles were able to complete their matchup in the Birmingham Bowl against Cincinnati. But it was not a pleasant ending for Steve Addazio’s charges, as they dropped below .500 for the year in a 38-6 loss to the Bearcats.
Inclement weather forced the officials to clear the sidelines to clear call for fans to leave the stands at Legion Field, leading to a 90-minute weather delay. Right before 5:00 pm Eastern, the two teams took the field again and resumed the game with 7:55 remaining in the first quarter.
From there, with the game scoreless, Cincinnati slowly exerted its dominance as the AAC East champion. Up 17-0 by halftime, the Bearcats pulled away further in the second quarter as they continued to control the game on both sides of the ball.
With the win, Cincinnati racked up their second straight 11-win season. What should we take away from the Bearcats win over a Power Five opponent that was 6-6 to end the season? Here are three things we learned from the Cincinnati victory on the day after New Year’s Day in the Birmingham Bowl victory over Boston College.
