College Football Rankings: Way-too-early Top 25 projections for 2020
By Zach Bigalke
After Texas took down Georgia in the Sugar Bowl to cap their 2018 season, they entered the preseason polls in the top 10. Here’s guessing that there will be a similar overreaction from voters in the AP Top 25 and the Coaches Poll after the Longhorns crushed Utah 38-10 in the Alamo Bowl to finish the year 8-5 in the standings.
Sam Ehlinger was efficient in victory, throwing for 201 yards and three touchdowns on 12-of-18 passing. Ehlinger added 73 yards and a touchdown on the ground, showcasing dual-threat ability to lead the Longhorns to victory. Sophomore running back Keaontay Ingram added 108 yards and a rushing touchdown, and freshman Roschon Johnson chipped in 49 yards on six carries. Just as important, the Texas defense held a potent Utah team to just 254 total yards of offense.
Tom Herman has one of the deepest teams in the country returning to Austin next season, and we will know after their Week 2 date with LSU in Death Valley whether they are up to the task of competing on the national stage. They will head to Baton Rouge firmly entrenched in the rankings for one of the biggest non-conference games of 2020.
