Oklahoma State football: Studs, thuds and duds from 2019 season
By John Scimeca
Oklahoma State football finished 2019 with an underwhelming 8-5 record. What were the best and the worst moments from the season?
Oklahoma State fans can be forgiven for leaving the 2019 season with a bad taste in their mouths. True, the team improved last season’s win total and broke in a new quarterback and offensive scheme. Defensively, too, the team improved overall.
But it might be the tantalizing promise of the “shoulda, woulda, coulda” that should leave the Cowboys hungry to begin the 2020 season. The Pokes were nationally ranked at several different points in 2019, but at the year’s end, they finished with zero wins over ranked teams (from the final Top 25 poll).
Losses to No. 7 Oklahoma, No. 13 Baylor, No. 25 Texas, and technically No. 26 Texas A&M punctuate a season in which Oklahoma State couldn’t deliver against the Big 12’s best or against the SEC’s middle tier. An early-season loss to Texas Tech, too, was marred by turnovers and other costly mistakes.
The silver lining from 2019 is, of course, the momentum that OSU might carry into the offseason. Considering the experience returning on defense and Chuba Hubbard’s announcement of returning hours before LSU’s national title game win over Clemson, ESPN has OSU pegged as the way-too-early No. 13 for 2020.
Who and what were OSU’s biggest studs, thuds, and duds from the 2019 season?
