Mississippi State football regressed from an 8-5 record last year to a disappointing 6-7 season on-and-off the field in 2019.
The future looked bright for the Mississippi State Bulldogs despite losing head coach Dan Mullen to the Florida Gators in late 2017. Joe Moorhead was brought on to bring a progressive workhorse team from James Franklin’s Penn State to Mississippi State. He was also to bring in a high-caliber, dynamic spread offense similar to what he created at Penn State.
This was evident in the first season with Moorhead last year when the Bulldogs finished ranked 25th in the nation and with an 8-5 record.
However, the Bulldogs encountered many problems on the offensive side of the ball as well as defensively. To make matters worse, the Bulldogs suffered a lot of structural problems internally that demolished their program overall. They were multiple games that the Bulldogs should’ve not been in a close game with or lost. The Bulldogs would’ve finished their season with a 5-7 record without a bowl appearance if it wasn’t for an embarrassing display from the Ole Miss Rebels in the Egg Bowl.
Overall, the Mississippi State Bulldogs regressed significantly from their successful season last year. Due to a disastrous season of a 6-7 record including a 38-28 loss to the Louisville Cardinals in the Music City Bowl, athletic director John Cohen fired Moorhead as head coach after only two seasons.
Here are the three biggest disappointments this season from the Bulldogs.
