2. Costello eases Mike Leach’s transition

When KJ Costello’s year is up, the next quarterback for the Mississippi State Bulldogs may or may not be on the current roster.

Garrett Shrader, a four-star recruit from North Carolina, is a big strong prospect who showed at times that he was raw even for a system that suits his skill set. He’ll have a bit of a learning curve with Mike Leach’s system. Keytaon Thompson has not played very much and it remains to be seen if he’s even in the plans for the Bulldogs going forward. Thompson has already entered the transfer portal once; he might do it again with the addition of Costello, Shrader playing last season, and the fact that he is a junior.

The Bulldogs also signed three-star quarterback Will Rogers who will join the team this season. They have these young inexperienced quarterbacks in the fold with a quarterback the caliber of Costello.

With a veteran like Costello, you have someone that can show the young guys how to work and prepare. When the time comes to choose a new starting quarterback, you have players who have been in the system for a year, and that lowers the learning curve.
