From freshman phenoms to talented transfers, quarterback battles have intensified over the past several college football seasons.

The most important position on a football team is that of the quarterback. From skill traits, such as a pocket passer or a scrambler, to how they’re acquired, through recruitment or through the transfer portal, the quarterback position can be broken down into several categories. While the starting quarterback does not have to be the best player on the team to lead them to wins and potentially championships, you still need the right guy calling the shots on offense, on both the sideline and in the huddle.

With all of this being thrown into one pot, quarterback battles have become more of an offseason topic than it has in the past. A big contributor of that is the transfer portal. Previously, it was all about the struggling starter from a year ago to highly recruited freshman fresh off of prom going head-to-head for QB1.

For 2020 we have a little bit of everything stirring up the pot. Down in Tuscaloosa, the top quarterback from the 2020 class looks to beat out Tua Tagovailoa’s backup and also his little brother.

In Ann Arbor, the Wolverines have two guys battling for the top spot after playing backups the previous two seasons. And the Bulldogs find themselves on other side of the transfer portal as an ACC transfer looks to spoil one of their top recruits from the 2020 class’ first season.

With all that being said, let’s take a look at some of the most intriguing quarterback battles of the offseason.
