Florida State football landed the No. 22 class in 2020 and the fourth-best in the ACC, but who could help Mike Norvell right away?

Firing a coach midway through the 2019 season, Florida State’s 2020 recruiting class took a hit. It didn’t finish as high as Seminole fans would have hoped but new coach Mike Norvell did some major damage control, signing the No. 22 overall class and fourth-best in the ACC.

In Willie Taggart’s previous recruiting class, Florida State was No. 18 and had the second-best group in the ACC behind only Clemson. Will the Seminoles start a trend back toward the top of the ACC and top-15 in the nation under Norvell? Potentially.

The first-year head coach still has plenty of talent to work with in 2020, but which signees will have the biggest impacts right away?

Demorie Tate is the only five-star prospect in Florida State’s 2020 class, even if he’s only listed as such by 247Sports and not the composite.

The highly-regarded cornerback from Orlando, Fla., runs a 4.52 40-yard dash and stands 6-foot-1 and weighs in at about 190 pounds so he has plenty of size and speed for the position. This is exactly what Florida State needs to get back on track defensively.

If that’s not enticing enough, Charles Power, a national recruiting writer from 247Sports, compared Tate to Raiders’ cornerback Gareon Conley and even projected him as a first-round talent. If he lives up to that potential, he’s going to be one special player in Tallahassee and the Seminoles may need him sooner rather than later with Stanford Samuels III gone.

Florida State still returns Asante Samuel Jr. and Akeem Dent, but Tate looks like the type of player who could come in and be a Freshman All-American.
