Iowa State Football: 3 instant impact signees from 2020 class
This was a toss-up between early enrollees Hayden Pauls and Tyler Miller and ultimately I had to go with the kid with more size. Pauls stands 6-5, 280 pounds which is nothing to scoff at, but Miller is a monstrous 6-foot-9 and 300 pounds. Sometimes playing early has nothing to do with size, but when you play in the trenches, it gives you a leg up to be just that much bigger.
Miller is a Jefferson, Iowa, native so he’s familiar with the program and he’s only five spots lower than Pauls in the overall composite rankings on 247Sports. He’s also the No. 60 offensive tackle in the class while Pauls is No. 59. These two are so close and that can’t be a bad thing.
With Miller’s size, I could see trying to get around him being an issue for opposing linemen. He has a wide frame and it’ll be tough to move a 6-foot-9 offensive lineman. He needs to make sure he develops quick feet and doesn’t just stand straight up off the snap.
Iowa State is losing Bryce Meeker and Josh Knipfel from the starting tackle spots this offseason and that opens the door for a kid like Miller to come in — as he’s already enrolled early — and compete right away.
