ACC Football: Top 10 recruits joining the conference in 2020
By Dante Pryor
4-3. Tate Rodemaker/Chubba Purdy, Florida State
First-year head coach Mike Norvell has some work to do at Florida State. He has to replace the production of all-everything running back Cam Akers.
More importantly than that, Norvell has to improve the offensive line. They were awful last season protecting whoever was behind center.
The defense improved but was inconsistent last season. They played undisciplined football at times; the Seminoles were one of the most penalized teams in the country. There were times when the Seminoles looked like a collection of talented players who had no desire to play with one another.
Norvell and his staff have to fix the chemistry issues, evaluate the talent and fix the culture in Tallahassee. The Seminoles did haul in a top 25 recruiting class. They did a good job recruiting the state, signing 12 players from Florida.
If Norvell wants to compete in the ACC, he and his offensive staff have to fix the quarterback position. They were awful last season. Whether it was James Blackman or Alex Hornibrook, there was little leadership and even less playmaking from the position. This is why both Tate Rodemaker and Chubba Purdy make the list.
Tate flipped from Central Florida and Chubba — younger brother of Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy — should push one another to start. Chubba might have an edge over Tate because he’s the better athlete, but Tate’s already enrolled and working so hit should be interesting.
Whichever quarterback wins the job will be an upgrade from last season.
