Butch Jones’ recent promotion to special assistant to Nick Saban for Alabama football is questionable but there is a bright future for him.

The Alabama Crimson Tide has already experienced a busy 2020 offseason of coaching changes. On Thursday, Butch Jones was promoted from offensive analyst to special assistant to head coach Nick Saban. The nature of his move seems unorthodox and unnecessary but there is more to the move than what it seems.

Coach Jones arrived at Alabama after five seasons as head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers. He was fired in 2017 after starting the season 4-6. Before arriving at Tennessee, coach Jones had three very successful seasons each as head coach for Central Michigan (2007-09) and Cincinnati (2010-12). Jones has been a pivotal role in creating one of the most efficient and explosive offenses in the nation for two consecutive seasons.

Jones originally took the offensive analyst position at Alabama to learn from one of the greatest college football coaches in Nick Saban. He could’ve taken another head coaching job at a smaller school or even an offensive coordinator at a power-five program. Even going into the 2020 season, coach Jones had offers to be a high-volume coach at another school.

Jones chose to stay at Alabama because he understands the process of coach Saban has previously established in previous seasons to the upcoming season.

Here’s why Jones being named special assistant to coach Saban is not a bad career move to make at this time.
