Karl Dorrell was plucked from the Miami Dolphins to replace Mel Tucker with Colorado football. Is he the right man to take over the Buffaloes?

Karl Dorrell’s name did not come up as a candidate for the job at Colorado until a day before he was hired. The names you heard were former Wisconsin and Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema, former Colorado running back and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy and interim coach and former Colorado wide receiver Darrin Chiaverini.

The Buffaloes reportedly interviewed Alabama offensive coordinator and former USC/Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian, Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun and the aforementioned Bielema.

It’s Dorrell who the Buffaloes chose as their 27th head coach. He signed a five-year, $18 million dollar contract and receives $3.88 million for his assistants.

There’s a lot to like about this hire. It might not be flashy, but where was the flash coming from this late in the process? The goal is all about winning championships, and Dorrell certainly spun that at his introductory presser. However, the Buffaloes’ concern first is going to bowl games more than twice in 13 years. He has both Colorado and Pac-12 ties which should serve him well in recruiting.

Was he the right man for the job? Here’s a closer look.
