Baylor Football: Don’t sleep on Denzel Mims as first-round NFL draft pick
After a scorching-hot NFL Combine performance, Baylor football’s Denzel Mims is look at first-round consideration come draft time.
Denzel Mims dominated during Senior Bowl week and improved his draft stock right after the season and it looked like he would be a Day 2 pick but what he did at the NFL Combine this week may have changed that.
In fact, he wowed everyone with his 4.39 40-yard dash time and 38.5-inch vertical. Coming in, Mims wasn’t looked at as a burner at wide out but more of a possession receiver who had no problem going up and getting any ball thrown his way. He was a walking highlight-reel, but after his combine showing, it’s clear that he’s so much more than just a good pass-catcher.
Mims is a freak athlete.
As if he didn’t earn himself some more money during Senior Bowl practices and the game itself, he doubled down at the combine and blew scouts away with his sub-4.4 40-yard dash. On top of that, he showed his hops as well as one of the best broad jumps of any prospect. People seem to forget that he was a state champion in the 200-meter dash in high school.
But standing 6-foot-3 and weighing about 207 pounds and running a quick 40 as well as showcasing his impressive vertical has scouts drooling.
It’s hard to say who he compares to at the NFL level, but this is an interesting stat:
Mims went from Day 2 likelihood to potential Day 1 prospect with his stellar performances following the 2019 season in which he finished with 1,000 yards for the second time in his career.
Baylor receivers are no strangers to the NFL, but will Mims end up as the most successful of the bunch? If he falls to Day 2, one team is going to have a heck of a steal and a potential future All-Pro.
