From two non-early enrollees to a kid who has already made his way to campus for the spring semester, Eli Russ has a leg up on his competition.

The offensive guard from Ardmore, Okla., has already been on campus, met his teammates, worked out with his peers and started conditioning and all that’s left is to start spring practice and learn the playbook like the back of his hand. When he does all of that, he should be on pace to see the field from day one.

What makes Russ an even more valuable signee is the fact that he plays a position of dire need for the Cowboys which is interior offensive lineman — but he could also play tackle. The Cowboys are losing Johnny Wilson and Marcus Keyes from last year’s starting group and that could make room for Russ.

No, he’s not a lock to hit the starting rotation, but he should be able to crack the two-deep this spring and make some noise as a top guard signee.
