History was made in the 2020 class for Utah. Clark Phillips III was a major fish for Kyle Whittingham and he reeled the four-star cornerback in, making him the highest-rated recruit to ever sign with Utah, according to 247Sports. Fellow 2020 signee Van Fillinger happens to be the eighth-highest rated recruit to ever sign with Utah.

Phillips is not only the top recruit in the class for the Utes, but he fills a position of need as Jaylon Johnson and Josh Nurse are moving on.

It’s fitting that Phillips fills the void left behind by Johnson as he was once one of the top-two recruits to ever sign with the Utes and it’s almost like a passing of the torch. Oh, and did I mention he’s already on campus as an early enrollee?

The La Habra, Calif., native is ranked the No. 50 recruit in the class and the fifth-best cornerback. He has decent size at 5-foot-10.5 and 180 pounds and he also has plenty of speed and the ability to put the clamps on opposing wide outs.

If Utah wants to continue the tradition of having one of the best defenses in the Pac-12 in 2020, Phillips needs to see the field early and often. I wouldn’t be shocked if this kid started from day one.
