3. Cole McDonald, Hawaii

The Hawaii quarterback had an excellent performance at the 2020 NFL Combine, which no doubt raised his stock in his chances of getting drafted.

Like most of these quarterbacks, unless you were a Hawaii fan, a quarterback fan or a fan of the Mountain West/Group of Five, you probably didn’t see much of Cole McDonald play. He put up huge numbers at Hawaii over the past two seasons and helped lead the Rainbow Warriors to a 10-win season this past year and an eight-win season the year before.

McDonald threw for over 3,800 yards in 2018 and over 4,100 yards in 2019. He also had 80 total touchdowns between those two season as well. While interceptions and some inconsistent play has been a knock on him, he has still shown the ability to put up big numbers and that passing attack system at Hawaii.

McDonald also tested really well at the 2020 NFL Combine recently as he recorded the fast 40-yard dash time out of any quarterbacks there, with a time of a 4.58. He was at the top or near the top in most of the other events as well.

Overview

McDonald is a big, strong athlete who has a good enough arm to make the throws he will be asked to make at the next level. He has good touch and feel on his throws as he throws a very catchable ball. His ability to run will make him dangerous at the next level, especially with the NFL using more packages for athletic quarterbacks.

His downfall was his inconsistencies at times as once he lost his rhythm, the turnovers would start to follow as he threw 14 interceptions this past year. He has even been benched at times when he really struggled and they needed a spark. McDonald has enough potential and enough to offer a team that it wouldn’t surprise me to see a team take him in a later round with the intent to develop him or even use him in different packages.

Below are highlights of Cole McDonald from this past season.

Plenty of accurate throws with good touch as well as clips of his athleticism and speed.
